Thoughts on the New Yankee Stadium

New Yankee Stadium has been a very hot topic after averaging 5.00 Home Runs per game in the first five games played there.  After tinkering with Hit Tracker and reading opinions across the internet, here’s what we can conclude:

  • New Yankee Stadium WILL be a hitter’s park this year.
  • New Yankee Stadium WILL NOT continue to yield 5.00 HR per Game.  The Great American Ballpark in Cincinatti allowed the most Home Runs last year, allowing 2.64 HR per Game.
  • 8 players already have multiple Home Runs in the new stadium, accounting for 16 of the 21 Home Runs.
  • Only 5 of the 21 Home Runs have come off decent pitchers (2 off Burnett, 1 off Joba, 1 off Cliff Lee and 1 off Wang).
  • With such a small sample size, it’s way too early to jump to conclusions.  The Home Run numbers should start to normalize after the current Oakland series and the next Home Series vs the Angels.
  • The new stadium design may produce a wind tunnel to right field. [link]
  • New Yankee Stadium is slightly shorter in right field. [link]

According to Accuweather.com, New Yankee Stadium naturally produces and upward wind flow in right field, resulting in balls being launched.
