After 11 Major League games, a lot of fantasy owners are asking whether the newest St. Louis Cardinal is here to stay. Or better yet, does Matt Adams deserve to be rostered in most fantasy leagues? The answer is yes. Adams was originally called up to replace the injured Lance Berkman and Allen Craig. After 45 Plate Appearances, Adams has proved he can hang with the big boys. And why not? After all, he is 6’3″ and 230 pounds.
Adams has a strong minor league pedigree, where he managed to hit .300+ at each of his five pit stops to the majors. His batter’s eye isn’t quite strong enough to suggest he maintains that average in the big leagues, but his power is for real. Adams smacked 32 Home Runs last year for Double-A Springfield. However, Busch Stadium may be a slight obstacle in his quest to 20 Home Runs this year. Busch Stadium yields 18 percent fewer home runs to lefties than an average ballpark. Don’t get too upset though. Every other stadium in the NL Central is either neutral or friendly towards left-handed hitters. So what we may see with Adams is a home/away power split.
Whether the home runs come or not, Adams should be an extra-base machine. Certainly worth a pick up in most standard fantasy leagues. Allen Craig is set to come off the Disabled List tomorrow, so we may see Adams take a seat Vs. some tough lefty matchups. The good news is that Allen Craig has been taking grounders at second base. So, don’t be scared to take a gamble on Matt Adams. His name may be boring, but his fantasy game won’t be.
