Continuing with possible Rookie of the Year candidates, Gaby Sanchez is sitting right on the edge of the ROY Radar. This 26 year old Marlins First Baseman is automatically a ROY candidates thanks to his full-time playing time from the start of the season. Sanchez is not flashy, but his experience and plate discipline make him a great candidate.
“Not flashy” may have been misleading, I meant to say boring. Have you ever owned Garrett Atkins, Conor Jackson or Sean Casey? Ever get tired of constantly seeing 1-3 in the box score with 1 run or 1 RBI (rarely both)? This is the exact DNA of Gaby Sanchez. A potential .300 hitter, without the potential to hit 30 home runs.
Does this make Sanchez a fantasy dud? Not necessarily. However, he has the type of fantasy game that requires him to hit somewhere between 2nd and 5th in the lineup in order to be valuable. That’s just not going to happen in 2010. A promising rookie season could provide him with the opportunity to hit at the top of the lineup next year, making Gaby Sanchez a potential 2011 breakout sleeper.

Gaby’s got the potential to be that boring player you don’t want on your team, but is too valuable not be to owned. Plan accordingly. With a little bit of luck, Sanchez has a chance to bring the NL Rookie of the Year award back to Florida for the second year in a row.
