Prospect Spotlight: Tommy Hanson

Tommy Hanson - Atlanta Braves

If you are a die hard Tommy Hanson fan or are firmly riding the bandwagon, I am warning you that you may not like what I’m about to say… Tommy Hanson will never be an “Ace.”  Woah, woah, woah, that had to be a typo.  The same guy who has 402 career strike outs in 343 innings, a 2.70 ERA and gives up less than one Home Run per nine innings is not destined to be an ace?  I am not a Tommy Hanson hater, or out to spoil his reputation.  I was actually very high on Hanson after his 2006 debut, but his lack of control has since tamed my expectations. In a perfect world, Hanson improves his control, and becomes the next Dan Haren.  More realistically, we are looking at a #2 or #3 pitcher that has great Stuff but has trouble putting it all together, ala Matt Garza or Mike Pelfrey.  The table below shows how these three pitchers minor league careers match up:

Hanson’s mid-90’s fastball paired with his disgusting curve ball has left minor league hitters stunned.  It should only be a matter of weeks before Hanson gets the call up to the big show.  If he is available in your fantasy league, then I recommend picking him up immediately and stashing him until he arrives. You don’t want to miss out on flame-throwing rookie.
