I have to admit that for the most part I ignored Indians third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall until August 2010. I am glad I finally took notice, because L-Cheez is going to be a special player.
Playing Style. Lonnie Chizz isn’t Rickey Henderson on the basepaths, but he’s not John Kruk, either. I wouldn’t be surprised if 10 steals a years became an annual tradition at some point in his career. His swing is silky smooth. He relies on this smooth swing to make up for his lack of physical power. I’m not lying when I say the potential for 40 home runs is within reach. Of course, he is a year or two away from that power total.
Opportunity. Playing time for prospects can be a double-edged sword. A double-edged sword could come in handy you might say. Not in this situation. What I speak of is the pressure prospects face when they are on bad teams. Playing time is good, but not when it means stunting development or damaging a prospects confidence when he’s just not ready for the Big Leagues. In Lonnie’s case, he appears very seasoned, and ready to earn his keep.
Comparables. I love comparing prospects to current players. His smooth swing will remind you of Nick Markakis. His power stroke will make you think you’re looking at the second coming of Chase Utley. At the worst, if he doesn’t become a star, he is the next David Murphy. Obviously, the Indians are hoping the Utley comparison holds true, but David Murphy ain’t too shabby as a fall back comp.
Fantasy Impact. In a word, huge. In more words, Chisenhall should get plenty of opportunities in Cleveland. He could break camp with the Indians. At the very latest, I expect Chisenhall up on June 1st. I’m going to go out on a limb and say Lonnie is my early favorite for 2011 AL ROY. Yes, Rookie of the Year.
2011 Prediction: 512 AB – 77 R – 19 HR – 84 RBI – 4 SB – .279 AVG

I can’t make up my mind on what to call him, I think I’m going to settle with “The Big Chisel”
