Performance on Fast Greens

When talking green speeds, we reference the stimpmeter. It is a device that drops a golf ball onto a few different segments of a green surface and the stimpmeter is how many feet the ball rolls out.

Using the stimpmeter rating we can determine how fast a green is running. Most public courses will sit between 8-to-10 feet but 10 feet is considered quite slow by PGA TOUR standards. The fastest greens on TOUR, annually, are Augusta National and Muirfield Village Golf Club, and they run 13 feet or higher each year.

The Fantasy Golfanac considers Fast Greens to be all courses with a stimp exceeding 12 feet.

Golfer Quotes

Q. It looks like you feel very comfortable with the speed of the greens. It looks like quicker the greens you better you putt.
I like fast greens, I always have. I definitely putt better on fast greens I feel like. There’s a lot more feel involved and you got to have good speed, which I feel like I always have pretty good speed, but I definitely feel like I’m rolling the putter really nicely right now. -2018 Memorial

PATRICK CANTLAY: I really like the place, I like fast greens, and I like the premium the golf course sets for hitting the ball in the fairway. You cannot play from the rough this week. I hit in the rough on a couple par-5s today and just scrambling to make par from there. So got to be in the fairway and I like golf courses that are like that. -2018 Memorial

BROOKS KOEPKA: No, these greens aren’t fast by any means. They’re a little bit slow for I guess tour speed and even being home and practicing they’re a touch slow. I mean, I love fast greens. You barely just got to hit it and just get it started. Just had to be a little more aggressive. I felt like they were all tap-ins yesterday instead of hitting it two, three feet by. That’s kind of more my style, being a little bit more of an aggressive putter. Just made that adjustment this morning. -2018 Colonial

TIGER WOODS: It normally happens on slower greens. I’ve always putted faster greens well, and slower greens I’ve always kind of struggled. -2018 Quail Hollow

AARON BADDELEY: The greens are super quick. They’re the quickest in four, five years. I really like that. You can hit the putt the way it is it goes in. That plays to my strength. -2017 Houston Open
