Tampa Bay Rays Jeremy Hellickson had a tremendous major league debut tonight against the Minnesota Twins. He allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out six batters in seven innings of work. His studder-step during his delivery had hitters off rhythm, and he was not afraid to mix in a breaking ball on fastball counts.
After the game, the Rays made no mistake in what their intentions with Hellickson were. Hellickson was sent back to Triple-A right after winning his first major league game.
Back in May of 2009, I spotlighted Hellickson. I said I would like to see Hellickson walk more batters, and that is exactly what he’s done in 2010. You could even say he now has borderline ace potential. It’s just a shame that the Rays don’t have any open spots in the rotation. Hellickson would be in a major league rotation if he played for about 25 teams other than the Rays.
If you own Hellickson in a keeper league, you should be very happy with this major league debut.
