Humana Challenge Fantasy Preview

Dude, is that your real hair? Tiger and Rory are getting all the attention this week with their new Nike commerical that is very reminiscent of the MJ-Larry Bird McDonalds commercial from back in the day. While those two are busy playing in Abu Dhabi, there is actually a tournament going on stateside. The Humana Bob Hope Classic Challenge as I like to call it. Let’s take a look at who should have success this week at PGA West.

Group A: Last week I suggested Tim Clark and Charles Howell III were both good options here. They finished 2nd and 3rd in the Sony Open. Of course, I decided to pick the other two golfers I mentioned, Jonas Blixt and Brandon de Jonge. Ouch! Bad decisions were made. I won’t make the same mistake twice. This time I am going with Tim Clark because he destroys short courses and all three courses at PGA West are less than 7,100 yards. I will also bring Brandt Sneds along with me to ride the pine in case I need him. Phil Mickelson used to dominate this tournament back when it was the Bob Hope Classic so he is worth a look as well. Bill Haas or Charles Howell III could be sneaky good plays. Haas has had some success here in the past but can he overcome his horrendous putting? Charles Howell III, on the other hand, really excels on the short courses, just like Tim Clark. There are actually a lot of good A-List options this week.

Group B: Bo Van Pelt is the man to go with here. He hasn’t done much at this tournament but Van Peezy did well enough last year to catapult himself into the OWGR Top 25. He did that by finishing Top 25 in 16 of the 24 events he entered. That is consistency. Seung-yul Noh, John Senden, and Jimmy Walker are some names to consider in case you don’t want to play it safe with BVP, Webb and Kuchar.

Group C: Russell Freakin’ Henley… Do you ride the hot clubs or fade him off his first big PGA Tour Victory? I am going to fade him and go with a different young’en, Harris English. Harris English finished in the Top 10 last week, and finished 19th here last year. English is a solid pick if you ask me. Okay, I’ve already changed my mind. I am going to pick another youngster instead, Luke Guthrie. Guthrie dominated the Tour last season in the small amount of tournaments he actually golfed in. If you want a long shot rookie, than look no further. He could be this week’s Russell Henley. The safe play in Group C is Robert Garrigus. He usually has a lot of fun at this tournament.
