Harvin’s Health Tips Minnesota’s Fantasy Balance

Minnesota’s Percy Harvin shone bright as a rookie in 2009, accounting for 2,000 yards of offense between his receiving, rushing and kickoff return duties. He managed all this while battling migraine headaches. ESPN’s Rachel Nichols reported that some of Harvin’s Vikings teammates were skeptical of the headaches‘ seriousness.

That skepticism vanished Thursday afternoon when Harvin collapsed on the practice field, leading to his hospitalization. Harvin has dealt with the headaches for years, including the 2009 season. He only missed one game, even more remarkable now that the world has seen what he’s dealing with.

Harvin had missed two weeks of practice before this and the Vikings don’t have a lot of answers right now. Sidney Rice is still on the physically unable to perform list due to a hip injury. The team waived Jaymar Johnson after he broke his thumb due in the first preseason game.

Minnesota worked out oft-injured receiver Brandon Jones Friday. He hasn’t been a  fantasy factor in his career yet and we don’t expect that to change.

If Harvin can start the season healthy, he is worth a spot on your roster but that is a huge if right now. For drafts occurring this week, take nothing more than a late-round flier on Harvin. If you do that, understand the risk involved as these headaches could be career-threatening. Bernard Berrian and tight end Visanthe Shiancoe will be targeted a lot more if Harvin and/or Rice can’t go. Adrian Peterson is still one of the best backs in football and still deserving of a Top 3 pick.
