Farmers Insurance Open Fantasy Preview

We are three weeks into the PGA Season but the real fun begins now. Enough with the celebrities golfing and the easy Hawaiian courses. It’s about to get real at Torrey Pines. The leaderboards are about to return to normal. No more Russell Henley, Scott Stallings, or Brian Gay’s of the world tearing up the leaderboards.

If you’re new to Fantasy Golf or have just never paid attention, The Farmers Insurance Open is played at two different courses. Golfers split the first 36 holes between the North and South Courses, then play the final 36 holes on the South Course. The North Course is noticeably easier than the South Course. I took a look at scores of the Top 5 over the previous five tournaments and the North Course played 3.64 strokes easier. I rarely support micromanaging Fantasy Golf Lineups but this tournament is perfect for it. Take a look at tee times and have all your starters tee off on the North Course on Thursday. Then have a complete “line change” of golfers that play the North Course for round two. This is an easy way to pick up some easy strokes.

Group A: Tiger Woods owns this tournament. He won it 6 times over a 10 year stretch. Injuries, slumps, and what not have kept him out of the winners circle since 2008, but I expect that to change very soon. Phil Mickelson, Brandt Snedeker, Charles Howell III, Bubba Watson, and Nicolas Colsaerts are other names to look at if you’re dumb enough to not pick Tiger.

Group B: Dustin Johnson is my favorite pick here. He has a decent history at Torrey Pines and is in top form. Ben Crane, Nick Watney, and Hunter Mahan are solid picks if you just want to go off recent success at Torrey Pines. Personally, I don’t put a lot of stock in course performance so I will be picking Bo Van Pelt, John Senden and Soon You’ll Know (Seung-yul Noh).

Group C: This is where things get interesting. If you want a horse for the course, go with Rickie Fowler, Camilo Villegas or Jhonny Vegas. Personally I am taking a chance on Luke Guthrie. Guthrie has three Top 25 finishes in his first six PGA Tour starts. A 50% success rate is pretty good if you ask me. I am going to ride him until the wheels fall off.
