Driver-Heavy Course Performance

Some golfers can’t wait to unleash the big stick while others prefer to club down whenever necessary, opting for a more accurate approach.

Some courses allow golfers to club down frequently without much penalty while other courses demand you hit at least 10-to-12 drivers just to keep pace. This angle looks at performance on those type of courses and see who improves or declines compares to their baseline performance.

* Golfers must have 30 rounds on driver-heavy courses (since 2014) to qualify for these lists. Stats are time-weighted and adjusted to the strength of competition.

Golfer Quotes

HAROLD VARNER III: I love when the courses are tough. You have to hit a lot of drivers, and I like that a lot. -2018 Ridgewood CC

Q. What’s your favorite club to hit?
HANK LEBIODA:
Driver. I love to hit driver. -2018 Web.com Tour Q&A

ROSS FISHER: Probably doesn’t suit the way I play golf because I like to be aggressive and hit driver. -2017 Mexico

Q. You hit it so far, is it a driver golf course, or looking back do you think you should have dialed it back off the tee?
GARY WOODLAND:
No, I think it is. Like I said, I only hit two fairways but I was able to get it up far enough where I was having wedges into the greens, so I was hitting most of the greens. I’d like to play from the fairway and attack the pins, but I was able to get it up far enough where I could hit the green. -2017 Torrey Pines

CHRIS KIRK: I’d say this course and Boston are probably the most similar as far as it’s a lot of drivers and it’s a long golf course and not a whole lot of wedges in. So it’s going to favor guys that are hitting their drivers real well and obviously putting well. -2014 East Lake
