The Chicago Bears are still intent on turning the world’s best kickoff returner into a mediocre wide receiver. Coach Lovie Smith and Mike Martz both raved about Hester to the Chicago Sun-Times. Quarterback Jay Cutler said Hester’s having an amazing camp. Receivers coach Darryl Drake called Hester “the team’s best receiver last season.” Statistically, that’s not true. Johnny Knox had 960 yards and five touchdowns in 2010, while Hester had only 475 yards. Curiously, he had nearly as many touchdowns, four total.
Anyone who owned Bears receivers last year knows they need to hit the end zone more frequently to be worth much in anything other than PPR leagues. At season’s end, I won’t be surprised if Knox outshines Hester yet again. But for now, Hester appears to have moved ahead of Knox on the depth chart.
