Money can buy a lot of things, but it can’t buy you love, happiness or a major league win. Using the Team Salaries from 2008 from CBS Sportsline, we notice that the correlation between Wins and Team Salary is .327, which is OK, but nothing significant. Every year there is a small-market team that makes the big spenders look foolish. Last year was Tampa Bay’s turn, winning the third highest amount of games while spending the second fewest. Who will be this year’s Tampa Bay? Oakland, Kansas City, Washington, Arizona, and Tampa Bay (again) all look like great candidates.
