Thats right DU as in Drake University, not as in Duke, or Duquesne, or Dayton, or DUI but as in Drake University. The Bulldogs are a college basketball team that everyone in the country should know about.
With literally zero national publicity Drake has run their record to 15-1 and 6-0 in their conference, the Missouri Valley. The last two games Drake has won without the Missouri Valley’s leading scorer, Josh Young, who sprained his ankle midway through the Bulldogs contest with Indiana State. These Bulldogs have senior leaders and their young guys want to help the seniors on the team win this year, this win-now mentality coupled with first-year coach Keno Davis’ influence has lead Drake to a 15-1 start. The one blemish on their resume so far was a loss at St. Mary’s, who holds the #6 RPI in the college ranks and wins over Oregon, by 12, and Seton Hall, by 15. Drake is led by seniors Klayton Korver (younger brother of the Utah Jazz forward Kyle Korver), Adam Emmenecker, a do-everything point guard, and the emotional leader of the team, Leonard Houston. Along with those three Drake starts a sophmore, the Valley’s leading scorer Josh Young, and a junior forward Jonathan Cox.
Drake boasts the #18 RPI in college basketball and yet is still never mentioned by the national media, even when they are talking about potential “mid-major” teams that could make an impact come March. I think this Drake team is going to take the lack of attention and use it to fuel a run into the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament, which would make them the 8th Missouri Valley team to make it to the Sweet 16 since 1994.
***UPDATE***: On Monday the 21st of January the Drake Bulldogs reached the top 25 with a ranking of #22 in the AP Poll and #23 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll.
