A Team Everyone Should Know About: St Mary’s (CA) Gaels

stmaryscal_logo.gifIf you don’t know about the St Mary’s Gaels by now, then you definitely need to check them out immediately! The first thing to know about them is their diversity. Four of their players come from the land down under, Australia. The “star” of the team is Patrick “Patty” Mills. I use the word “star” loosely because this is great team that actually plays like a team, unlike a lot of college teams today. Mills, and the rest of the Aussies on the squad, all come from the Australian Insitute of Sport. This Institute is the same breeding ground as the Milwaukee Bucks Andrew Bogut. Although Mills leads the team in scoring with 15.1 PPG, he is not a selfish player (also leads the team in assists with 4.1 assists/game) . (Jr) Diamon Simpson and (Soph) Omar Samhan are the second and third leading scorers behind Mills with 12.8 and 11.2, repectively. Think it’s just a three man show? Think again, (Sr) Todd Golden has the #1 offensive rating in all of college basketball according to Ken Pomeroy, a well known college basketball statistician. Golden has a remarkable 4.2 Assist/Turnover ratio and shoots 94% and 39% from the FT Line and 3PT Line, respectively. The Gaels have played their way to a 15-2 record, with impressive wins over Drake, Oregon, San Diego St, Seton Hall, and Ohio. Their two losses have come on the road at Texas and on the road at Southern Illinois. Look for the St. Mary’s Gaels to be ranked shortly, and mark February 4th on your calendar right now. They will be on ESPN 2 vs conference rival Gonzaga.
