5 Closers that could be on the move

With the July 31st trade deadline quickly approaching, here are five closers that have a reasonable chance of getting traded to a contender.  If traded, these closers would turn into set up men, thus losing all values in most fantasy leagues.  If you desparately need closers then it would be very wise to keep an eye on all these situations.

georgesherrill1. George Sherrill. Sherrill has consistently win a one-run above replacement level pitcher over the last three season while getting paid like a replacement level pitcher.  Teams love to line up for quality lefties, which is exactly what Sherrill is.  Jim Johnson appears to be next in line, but Danys Baez and Chris Ray (once he returns from the DL) are also candidates since they ahve closing experience.

Next-In-Line: Jim Johnson

Sleeper: Danys Baez

fcordero2. Francisco Cordero. The Reds are now 7.5 games back from the NL Central lead.  Cordero has only blown one save this year, and has a sub-two ERA.  Arthur Rhodes is the logical choice for a replacement, but the Reds may want to give a young guy a chance if they aren’t contending this year anyways.

Next-In-Line: Arthur Rhodes

Sleeper: Daniel Herrera

matt capps3. Matt Capps. Teams aren’t exactly lining up for Capps, but with his late game track record over the past three seasons (59 SV – 11 BS), someone may want to add him to strengthen their Post-Season bullpen.  John Grabow has done alright in the set up role, but his career 16 Blown Saves to 6 actual Saves is not a good sign.  Joel Hanhrahan would be the best man for the job.

Next-In-Line: Joel Hanhrahan

Sleeper: Evan Meek

chad qualls4. Chad Qualls. The D-Backs have blown 13 of their 35 Save Opportunities, so this bullpen isn’t exactly “steady”.  However, a lot of teams would like to add a reliver with a 33 to 5 K/BB ratio with 3 HRs in 40 innings.  Jon Rauch would likely shift into the closer’s role, but there is also a possibility they give their “closer of the future”, Daniel Schlereth, a shot to show his stuff.

Next-In-Line: Jon Rauch

Sleeper: Daniel Schlereth

heath bell5. Heath Bell. “Eat too many Heath Bar’s” Bell has been lights out this year. Of all relievers, he ranks sixth in WXRL. Bell would be a really great pickup for any contender lucky enough to snag him.  Edward Mujica and Luke Gregerson would likely fight over the closer’s role in the event of Bell getting traded.

Next-In-Line: Edward Mujica

Sleeper: Luke Gregerson
