Fall is here again so break out the babes, brews, and BBQ’s because it’s football season. When looking at the 2009 season from a fantasy perspective, there will certainly be some big time newcomers to the NFL scene with large fantasy potential such as a Percy Harvin or Knowshon Moreno but first let’s focus on the QB position.
The “Sure Things”:
1: Drew Brees- Since joining the New Orleans regime, Drew Brees has been a flat-out fantasy stud. Without anything resembling an elite receiver (verdict is still out on Colston), Brees has used the versatility of his backs and slot receivers to produce a successful offense. With a full healthy season of Marques Colston and Lance Moore as well as an exciting RB tandem of Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas, look for Brees to have another big time season in the big easy.
2: Peyton Manning- Let’s be honest here, this guy is the face of the National Football League. Tom Brady is a big time producer and gets bonus points because his wife is a top talent but Peyton Manning is still the “field-general” any coach would start their team with. Manning may not have the elite receiving corps from yesteryear but he will surely be able to give you another 4,000 YD/25 TD season.
3: Tom Brady- While coming back from such an extensive knee injury is most certainly scary, Tom Brady is just too much of a competitor to let his beloved Patriots down. Directly out of the gate Brady may be hesitant but look for him to get comfortable around week 3 and really start producing. Belichick is just too good to not help Mr. Brady another put out another 4,500 YD/30 TD effort.
The “Coin Flips”:
1: Kurt Warner- Warner had an amazing 2008 season but my apprehension lies in the fact that this guy is just flat out getting old. He easily has one of the best WR tandems of Fitzgerald and Boldin in the fold but it may be hard for Warner to stay in the pocket for another full NFL season at his age. His “coin flip” could mean another big time season with 4,200 YD/ 32 TD season or he could have an early exit in 2009.
2: Donovan McNabb- Before the addition of Michael Vick, McNabb seemed like a sure-fire fantasy starter. Now, on top of some lingering injury concerns, Andy Reid is discussing implementing the wildcat offense in Philly. This will help the Eagles as they will have an extremely versatile offense with McNabb, Westbrook, and Vick, but it may hurt McNabb’s fantasy production. His “coin flip” could either be a 3,600 YD/22 TD season or half that if the wildcat steals his QB thunder (see: 2008 Ronnie Brown).
The “Untouchables”:
1: Jay Cutler- This may just be my hatred for this self-proclaimed “young Elway”, but where is the upside for Cutler relative to the 2008 season? This young punk goes from having stud WR Brandon Marshall and rookie sensation Eddie Royal to Devin Hester. Consider me under whelmed. Chicago will run more than Denver with their young revelation at RB Matt Forte, which in turn will most like frustrate Cutler. Look for him to get flustered and continue to think he can make any throw at any time. He may have another 3500 YD/20 TD season but I am also looking for 15-20 INT’s.
