2008-09 Sleeper Alert: Marcus Williams

marcus-williams.jpgFollowing the departure of Baron Davis from Golden State, Marcus Williams was acquired from the New Jersey Nets to fill the void. This immediately sparked interest to fantasy owners all over.  After all, who wouldn’t want to own a 3rd-year Point Guard on a team who has finished in the top 5 fastest pace teams each of the past 4 years?

Then came the devasting injury to Monta Ellis, leaving Williams to officially run the point as the starter for at least 3 months, and probably for the entire season.  If you’re saying “whoopty-doo, who cares? His career averages are 6.4 pts, 3 asts” then look a little closer…

Marcus Williams has played 17 games in his career in which he was on the court for 20+ Minutes, this is what he has to show for those:

Pts 3ptm Reb Ast Stl TO
11.7 1.1 3.6 4.6 1.1 2.0

Not bad for slightly over 20 minutes a game.  What if we assume Williams gets 35 minutes per game this year (not unlikely considering currently his only competition for PG duties is C.J. Watson):

Mins Pts 3ptm Reb Ast Stl TO
35.0 15.2 2.4 4.7 6.0 1.4 2.6

Look familiar to Golden State fans? those stats are Baron Davis Lite, nearly all the stats but less risk (21.8 Pts, 2.1 3ptm, 4.7 Rebs, 7.6 Asts, 2.3 Stls, 2.8 TOs).  Scary to think about, but he’d need to really break out to get near Baron Davis like fantasy numbers.  Getting a third point-of-view, let’s look at the type of numbers Marcus Williams has racked up in his 9 career starts in the NBA:

Mins Pts 3ptm Reb Ast Stl TO
31.2 11.8 1.4 4.0 6.3 1.0 3.0

Now his fantasy game appears to be more on course with the likes of Devin Harris, Mike Bibby, Kirk Hinrich, T.J. Ford, etc. This is not a bad group of players to be associated with, especially considering Williams should still be around in your fantasy draft after all of these other Point Guards are scooped up.

What will Williams’ numbers actually look like this year?  If I were a bettin’ man, then I’d be willing to lay a chunk of change on his numbers falling somewhere between the last two sets of stats. Don’t get caught hitting the snooze button on Marcus Williams.

2008-09 Prediction: 13.6 Pts, 1.8 3ptm, 6.1 Asts, 3.9 Rebs, 1.1 Stls, 2.5 TOs
